Youth addictions and the impact on mental health

This makes me think a lot about how common addictions can shape our younger years and the long-lasting effects they have on mental health. Reflecting on my own experiences, I realize how easy it is to get caught up in things when we’re searching for ways to cope or just fit in.

I remember seeing friends drawn into various forms of addiction—be it social media, substance use, or even gaming. At the time, it seemed harmless, maybe even fun. But looking back, I can see how those habits began to take a toll. There were late nights spent scrolling through Instagram instead of sleeping, or moments at parties where the pressure to drink felt immense. It’s like we were trying to escape something, but what we often ended up with was this cycle of anxiety and insecurity.

For me, it was a mix of wanting to be accepted and battling my own self-doubt. I think that’s a common thread for many of us. Addiction doesn’t always look like what we picture—it can be as subtle as needing validation from likes on a post or feeling like we can’t enjoy a gathering without a drink in hand.

The pressure to maintain a perfect image on social media is something I still grapple with. It can morph into this constant need for approval, which can lead to a pretty slippery slope for mental health. I found myself in moments of comparison, feeling inadequate, and that just spiraled into deeper feelings of anxiety and depression.

I wonder how many of us are caught in similar patterns, even if we don’t recognize them as addictions. It’s empowering to finally acknowledge that and realize we have the ability to change our relationship with these things. It’s been a journey for me—learning to set boundaries with social media and finding healthier outlets for stress.

I’m curious to know how others have navigated their own experiences with addictions in youth. Have you found ways to break free from those cycles, or do you still feel the impact of them today? What strategies have worked for you in creating a healthier mindset? It’s all about sharing and learning from each other, and I’d love to hear your thoughts!
