I’ve been wondering whether what I deal with actually fits the DSM-5 definition of agoraphobia, or if I’m using the term too loosely. It isn’t just that I dislike crowded places. The bigger issue is feeling trapped or far from a safe exit, especially on public transportation, in busy stores, or when I’m somewhere where leaving would feel embarrassing.
Sometimes I avoid going alone because I’m afraid I’ll panic, feel sick, or lose control and nobody will help. Other times I force myself to go, but I spend the whole time planning how quickly I could get outside. It’s frustrating because from the outside it probably looks like I’m just being difficult or antisocial.
The part that makes me unsure is that I don’t feel anxious in every public place, and I can manage some situations if someone I trust is with me. I know the DSM-5 talks about fear in multiple types of situations and avoidance or needing a companion, but I’m not sure how specific or consistent it has to be. I’m thinking I should bring examples to a professional instead of trying to diagnose myself from lists online.
