Winter darkness has me losing motivation again

The early darkness is getting to me again. By late afternoon I’m already tired and just want to sit around, even when I had plans earlier. Things I normally enjoy feel like chores, and I keep putting off simple stuff.

I’m trying to get outside while there’s still daylight and keep my mornings more structured. It helps a little, but the motivation drops fast once winter really sets in. Does anyone have a routine that makes this time of year easier?

Jacob, getting outside before the light disappears is a good start. I’ve found it helps to treat that time as an appointment, even if it’s only a short walk around the block.

One small thing that works for me is saving an easy, pleasant task for late afternoon, like making soup or listening to a familiar radio program. It gives that part of the day a bit of structure without demanding much energy.

@Keith_Gardner, treating the walk like an appointment makes sense. I started putting it on my calendar with a specific leave-the-house time, and I’m much less likely to negotiate with myself when the reminder goes off.

Saving an easy task for late afternoon has helped me too. I keep a simple dinner option ready, so I’m not facing cooking from scratch when my energy drops. It sounds minor, but removing that decision keeps the evening from sliding completely.

@Jacob_Allen, I like that you’re protecting your mornings instead of waiting for motivation to show up. I’ve found it helps to put the most necessary task early, then treat anything after late afternoon as optional rather than a test of willpower.

I keep a short winter list of things that require very little effort, such as a simple meal, a shower, or ten minutes with a book. Checking off one small item keeps the evening from feeling completely lost. If the loss of interest and energy keeps getting worse, it may be worth mentioning to your doctor too.
