Ahh, winter. The season of cozy sweaters, hot cocoa, and the blues. Anyone who’s gone through a harsh winter knows that cold temperatures and lack of sunshine can bring on a real case of the blues. For me, it usually kicks in around December, and it’s hard to shake off even when the first signs of spring come in March.
But I’ve learned some strategies for managing my winter blues which may be helpful for those experiencing the same thing. To start with, I try to stick to a regular schedule. Making sure I get enough rest each night and aim for at least a few hours of daily exercise helps keep my mood level throughout the season. On extra gloomy days, I make sure to get outdoors - even if it’s just a short walk around my neighborhood - because being out amongst nature lifts my spirits more than staying indoors ever could!
I also make an effort to connect with friends regularly – or as much as possible given everyone’s schedules! Talking things out with shallow connections gives me a chance to feel supported and makes me realize how much easier it is to manage my day-to-day struggles during times like these when we come together.
Finally, although it feels counterintuitive sometimes, reminding myself that feeling down happens naturally every once in awhile is really helpful when coping with winter depression. It also helps me try to stay present instead of dwelling on past issues or worries about the future – both of which only add fuel to the fire! So no matter what this winter has been like for you so far, take care and remember that spring isn’t too far away!
