When everything feels slightly off and i cant leave it alone

When everything feels slightly off, I can’t seem to let it go. A picture might be tilted by a tiny amount, something on my desk may not feel centered, or I’ll reread a message because one part of it doesn’t sound quite right. It’s not always obvious what needs fixing, but I get this strong feeling that I have to keep adjusting things until they feel correct.

The frustrating part is that even when I finally get it right, the relief doesn’t last. A few minutes later I notice something else, or I start questioning whether it was actually right in the first place. I can lose a lot of time making small changes that probably wouldn’t bother anyone else.

I’ve tried telling myself to leave it alone, but that usually makes the discomfort louder. Does anyone else deal with this constant need for things to feel just right?

That part about the relief disappearing a few minutes later really gets me. I’ve found that chasing the “correct” feeling usually just teaches my brain to ask for another adjustment.

One thing that helped was setting a short timer before I started fixing something. When it went off, I had to leave it as-is, even if it still felt wrong. The discomfort was pretty loud at first, but it usually dropped if I didn’t go back and check.

@Diane_Kelly, the part about questioning whether it was actually right after fixing it is so familiar. That doubt can pull me right back in, even when I know I already checked it several times.

I’ve had some luck treating the feeling like an alarm instead of a problem I need to solve. I might say to myself, “This feels off, but I’m not required to fix it,” then leave the picture or message alone for a set amount of time. It’s uncomfortable, but sometimes the discomfort fades without the thing ever becoming perfectly settled.
