When eating healthy starts taking over my life

I used to think eating healthy was just about feeling better, but lately it feels like it’s taking over everything. I spend way too much time checking ingredients, planning meals, and worrying about whether something is “clean” enough. If I eat something I didn’t prepare myself, I can feel guilty for hours afterward.

The frustrating part is that from the outside it probably looks like discipline. People compliment me for being healthy, so it’s hard to explain that I don’t feel healthy mentally. I’ve started avoiding meals with other people and turning down plans because I’m afraid I won’t have safe food available. Even when I’m hungry, I sometimes wait because what I want to eat doesn’t fit the rules in my head.

I don’t want food choices to control my whole day. I’m trying to notice how anxious and restricted I’ve become, instead of treating those feelings like proof that I need stricter rules. I think I need help with this before it gets even more isolating.

@Erin_Murphy, the part about people mistaking this for discipline really hit me. Compliments can make it even harder to admit that the rules are causing distress, since everyone thinks they’re praising something healthy.

Waiting to eat because food doesn’t fit the rules sounds exhausting too. I’d take the isolation and guilt seriously and bring it up with a therapist or doctor who understands eating issues. You deserve support before it gets any more controlling.

@Tristan_Curry, the compliments really can reinforce the problem. I’ve had people praise “willpower” when I was actually getting more anxious and rigid, which made it harder to admit anything was wrong.

I like that you pointed out finding someone who understands eating issues. A regular doctor might only see the healthy-looking habits and miss the fear and guilt underneath. Having someone ask about the mental cost, not just the food itself, seems like a good place to start.
