I keep getting stuck on how hard it is to tell what belongs to bipolar symptoms and what comes from being in a narcissistic relationship. During a mood episode, I can be impulsive, intense, and unsure of my own judgment. But then the other person uses every mistake as proof that I’m unstable, while denying the things they said or did. After enough of that, I start doubting memories that used to feel clear.
The confusing part is that stress from the relationship can make my symptoms worse, and then those symptoms get used as an excuse to control me. I’ve apologized for reactions that were understandable, just because I couldn’t explain them calmly in the moment. Sometimes I leave conversations feeling like I’m the entire problem, even when the original issue had nothing to do with my bipolar disorder.
I’m trying to separate accountability from self-blame. Managing bipolar disorder is my responsibility, but it doesn’t mean someone gets to manipulate me, rewrite events, or treat me badly. Writing things down and talking with a therapist who understands both mood disorders and emotional abuse has helped me get a little clearer. The main thing I’m learning is that symptoms may explain some of my behavior, but they don’t excuse someone else’s harmful behavior toward me.
