Watching a family member get pulled into vaping and anxiety

Watching a family member get pulled into vaping has been harder than I expected. At first it seemed like something casual, just trying it with friends. Then it became part of the daily routine, and I started noticing more restlessness, irritability, and anxiety when they couldn’t vape.

I know anxiety can have a lot of causes, so I’m not assuming vaping is behind everything. Still, nicotine seems to make the whole situation more complicated. They’ll say it helps them calm down, but later they seem even more tense and distracted. Trying to talk about it without sounding judgmental has been difficult. Lectures just seem to make them shut down.

I’ve been focusing more on listening and encouraging them to speak with a doctor or counselor, especially about the anxiety itself. Has anyone found a way to bring up vaping with a family member without making them feel attacked?

@Courtney_Pacheco, noticing that they get more tense between vaping sessions seems like a useful observation, but I can see why you’d avoid presenting it as proof. That can make someone defensive fast.

What worked better in my family was asking what they felt vaping was doing for them, then gently asking whether the relief actually lasted. Keeping the focus on their own observations made it less like a lecture. I’d probably bring it up during a calm moment and suggest mentioning both the anxiety and nicotine use to a doctor, rather than making quitting the only topic.

@Courtney_Pacheco, asking what they notice before and after vaping seems less confrontational than pointing out every change you see. A question like, “Does it actually calm you for long, or does the tension come back pretty quickly?” might give them room to think without feeling cornered.

I’ve found that timing matters too. Bringing it up during an argument usually turns it into a defense of the habit. A calm conversation focused on how they feel, rather than on blame, may make it easier for them to mention both the vaping and anxiety to a doctor. Have they been open to tracking when the restlessness or irritability shows up?
