My thoughts keep looping on the same things, even when I know they don’t make much sense. I’ll replay a conversation, worry that I missed something, then go over it again hoping to feel certain. The annoying part is that the reviewing rarely settles anything. It just gives the thought another lap.
I’m starting to understand that OCD isn’t always about obvious routines or cleaning. For me, it can look more like getting stuck in mental checking and trying to solve a feeling of doubt. Once I notice the loop, I try not to argue with every thought. Sometimes I just label it as a loop and leave it alone, though that’s easier said than done.
It helps a little to remember that having a thought doesn’t mean it’s true or that I want it. I’m still trying to figure out how to stop feeding the cycle without getting pulled into another round of reassurance.

The part about reviewing a conversation to feel certain really gets me. I can spend ages trying to find the exact point where I might have said something wrong, and then the fact that I’m still unsure feels like proof I need to check again.
Labeling it as a loop seems more useful than arguing with the thought, even though it feels uncomfortable to leave it unresolved. I’ve been trying to notice the urge for reassurance and wait before acting on it. Do you find it easier to leave the thought alone when you’re busy, or does it follow you either way?
@Charles_Scott, the part about the reviewing giving the thought “another lap” makes a lot of sense. I’ve noticed that when I keep searching for the perfect explanation, I’m usually not solving anything. I’m just teaching my brain that the doubt deserves more attention.
Labeling it without trying to prove it wrong sounds useful, even if it feels unfinished. Sometimes I’ll tell myself, “Maybe I missed something, maybe I didn’t,” and then shift to whatever I was doing. The uncertainty is still there for a while, but it doesn’t always need an answer right then.
The “another lap” description really fits. I’ve noticed that mental checking can feel productive because I’m concentrating so hard, but afterward I’m usually less certain than when I started. That was a useful clue for me that the reviewing itself had become part of the problem.
I’ve been trying to stop at the label and move back to whatever is in front of me, without waiting to feel completely settled first. The discomfort can hang around, especially when the conversation mattered, but it sometimes fades faster when I don’t keep examining it.
Do you have a particular phrase or activity that helps you shift attention once you recognize the loop?
