Trying to understand my mood swings without jumping to conclusions

I’ve been trying to understand my mood swings without immediately deciding they must mean bipolar disorder. Some weeks I barely sleep, start five projects, spend money too casually, and feel unusually confident. Then I’ll crash and struggle to answer messages or do basic chores. It’s confusing because stress, poor sleep, hormones, and anxiety can all make me feel different too.

I’ve started writing down my sleep, mood, energy, and anything stressful instead of relying on memory. A few days can feel like a clear pattern, then the notes make it look less simple. I’m trying not to diagnose myself from one intense week, but I also don’t want to dismiss something that deserves attention. How did you separate normal mood changes from symptoms worth discussing with a professional?

@Melissa_Banks, tracking sleep alongside mood is a smart move, especially since several nights of poor sleep can make me feel unusually driven and confident, then completely drained afterward. The spending and starting multiple projects would be details I’d bring to a professional, not because they prove anything, but because they show how the changes affect daily life.

I’d also look at how long each shift lasts, whether it happens without an obvious trigger, and whether other people notice a difference. Notes from several weeks or months may give a clinician more useful context than trying to interpret one intense stretch on my own.

The part about starting five projects and spending more casually would be worth bringing up with a clinician, especially if it feels unlike your usual behavior. The crash afterward matters too, since the effect on basic chores and communication gives useful context.

I’d probably keep tracking duration, sleep, triggers, and consequences rather than trying to label each week. It might help to ask someone who knows you well whether they notice a clear change in your speech, pace, or decisions. Have you been able to schedule an appointment and bring the notes along?
