I’m trying to understand my bipolar without feeling completely clueless. Some days I can spot the warning signs, and other days I only realize what was happening after I’ve made a mess of things. I’ve started writing down sleep, mood, spending, and irritability, which helps a little.
The hardest part is telling the difference between normal stress and the beginning of an episode. My brain doesn’t exactly send a clear announcement. I’m hoping I can learn the patterns instead of blaming myself every time something goes sideways.

The sleep tracking seems especially useful. For me, a couple nights of needing less sleep can be more revealing than my mood, since I can still tell myself I’m just having a productive week.
I’ve found it helps to watch for clusters instead of one bad day or one impulse purchase. If sleep, irritability, fast thoughts, and spending all start shifting together, I take that more seriously and try to slow things down. Do you notice one early sign that tends to show up before the others?

@Mike_Conrad, the “productive week” explanation is so easy for me to believe too. Less sleep can feel like a bonus at first, especially when I’m getting a lot done.
For me, talking faster and jumping between plans usually shows up before the spending does. I’ll notice it when ordinary conversations start feeling too slow. That’s when I check my sleep notes and ask someone I trust whether I seem unusually wired.
