I wonder if I spent too long treating addiction like it existed separately from everything else going on in my head. For a while, my main goal was simply to stop using, and that goal mattered. But I eventually realized that if I ignored depression, old hurt, poor sleep, and the ways I handled stress, I was leaving some of the reasons I used completely untouched.
Treatment has felt more useful when I can talk honestly about both sides of the problem. I’ve been trying to find support that doesn’t reduce me to a diagnosis or make every difficult feeling sound like a personal failure. Therapy, medical guidance, and recovery groups have each offered something different, although finding the right combination has taken patience. I’m also learning that medication decisions need to be handled carefully with a professional, especially when addiction is part of the picture.
The hardest part has been accepting that progress isn’t always dramatic. Sometimes it means noticing a craving earlier, getting through a bad evening without isolating, or admitting that I’m struggling before things spiral. I’m trying to build routines that support my mental health rather than relying on willpower alone.
I’m curious how other people have balanced recovery with treatment for depression, trauma, or other mental health concerns. Did addressing both at the same time make recovery feel more sustainable, or did it ever feel overwhelming?
