Trying to manage drinking and depression at the same time

I keep getting stuck in the same loop with drinking and depression. I drink because I feel low, then I wake up feeling worse, ashamed, and even less able to deal with the day. For a while, alcohol makes things quiet. Later it makes everything louder.

The frustrating part is that I can’t seem to work on one without the other getting in the way. When I’m depressed, stopping feels pointless. When I drink, taking care of my mental health becomes harder. Even basic stuff like eating properly, sleeping, or answering messages starts to slide.

I’ve been trying to focus on small changes instead of promising myself I’ll fix everything at once. Drinking less, getting outside, and being honest with a doctor about both problems, not just one. I’m not expecting motivation to magically show up, but I know hiding the drinking makes the depression harder to treat.

Has anyone found a way to handle both without feeling overwhelmed by the whole thing?

@Michael_Brown, the part about being honest with a doctor about both really matters. I used to minimize the drinking because I thought the depression was the “real” problem, but leaving either one out made it harder to get useful help.

What’s helped me is making the goal smaller than “stop drinking and fix my life.” On a rough day, I might just eat something, drink water, and delay the first drink for an hour. It doesn’t always work, but it gives me a little space between feeling bad and acting on it.

Also, if you drink heavily or every day, stopping suddenly can be dangerous, so I’d tell the doctor exactly how much and how often. Shame makes the loop worse. Being honest about it is a practical step, not a failure.

@Michael_Brown, the way you described alcohol making things quiet at first and louder later really landed with me. That temporary relief can make the next decision feel almost impossible, especially when depression has already drained your energy.

What helps me is having one very simple plan for the next few hours, not the rest of my life. Water, something easy to eat, a shower or brief walk, and texting one trusted person can be enough for that day. I’d also be upfront with a doctor about how much and how often you’re drinking, since stopping suddenly can be risky for some people. Shame tends to keep the loop going, while honest support can start loosening it.
