Trying to keep pandemic stress from taking over my evenings

My evenings were the hardest during the pandemic. I could get through work by staying busy, then the news and constant updates would start looping in my head as soon as I sat down. A small thing that helped was putting my phone in another room after dinner and taking a slow walk around the block, even when I didn’t feel like going. Some nights I just watched an old comedy and let myself have a few hours without trying to solve anything.

Did anyone else find a simple evening routine that actually made the stress easier to manage?

The phone in another room made a bigger difference for me than I expected. I started charging it in the kitchen after dinner, so checking updates meant getting up instead of mindlessly reaching for it.

I also kept a familiar sitcom on while I made tea and cleaned up. It gave my brain something predictable to focus on, and I noticed I fell asleep more easily when I stopped treating the evening like another problem-solving session.

@Linda_Garcia, charging it in the kitchen is a clever bit of friction. I used to leave mine beside the couch and wonder why I kept checking it every few minutes.

The familiar sitcom idea makes sense too. I found that reruns worked better than new shows because I wasn’t waiting for the next twist or trying to follow every detail. Did you keep the same show in rotation, or switch between a few comfort shows?
