Trying to get help for addiction and mental health through algonquin

I’ve been looking into getting help for addiction and mental health through Algonquin, but I’m not sure where to start. It’s hard enough admitting I need support, then the forms, referrals, and figuring out which service actually fits can feel like another barrier.

I’m dealing with both substance use and mental health problems, so I’m hoping to find something that treats them together instead of sending me in two different directions. I’ve had periods where I tried to manage things on my own, but that hasn’t worked very well. I’m ready to take it more seriously now, even though I’m still nervous about talking openly.

Has anyone gone through Algonquin for addiction and mental health support, and what was the first step?

The forms can feel like a lot when you’re already trying to keep things together. I’d start by calling Algonquin directly and saying clearly that you need help with both substance use and mental health, and that you’re looking for coordinated care. They should be able to tell you whether you need a referral or point you to the right intake service.

You don’t have to explain everything perfectly on the first call. I’ve found it helps to write down a few basics beforehand, like what you’re using, how often, what mental health symptoms are getting in the way, and whether you feel safe right now. Even just making that first contact is a solid step.

Writing down the basics beforehand is good advice. I tend to freeze when someone asks questions on the spot, so having a few notes would make the call less stressful.

I once put off contacting a service because I thought I needed to explain everything perfectly. The intake worker mostly needed a clear starting point, not my whole history.

The reminder that you don’t have to explain everything perfectly is probably the part I needed to hear. I’ve put off calls before because I was trying to organize my whole history in my head, and then ended up saying nothing at all.

Writing down what I’m using, how often, and whether I feel safe seems simple, but it would give me something to look at if I freeze. I’d probably add any medications and a couple questions about whether the addiction and mental health sides can actually be handled together.
