Trying to get help for addiction and mental health in Austin
I’ve been looking for help with both addiction and my mental health, and it’s been harder to sort out than I expected. A few places seem focused only on substance use, while others don’t really address the depression and anxiety underneath it.
I’m trying to find care that treats both at the same time, without feeling judged or passed around. I’ve checked some local programs, but the options and waitlists are confusing. Has anyone found a solid dual-diagnosis provider in Austin?

@Paula_Howard, the being passed around part is so frustrating, especially when depression or anxiety is tied closely to the substance use. I’d ask each place directly whether they provide integrated dual-diagnosis treatment, rather than treating one issue and referring the other elsewhere.
Have you contacted Austin’s 988 line or Integral Care? They may be able to point you toward current programs and help clarify waitlists. When I’ve called around for care, asking about the assessment process, medication support, and what happens while waiting has saved a lot of time.

@Donna_Saunders, asking what happens while waiting is a really useful suggestion. A lot of places sound helpful until you ask about the gap between the first call and the actual appointment.
When I was calling around for care, I kept a short list of questions about medication, withdrawal support, and whether mental health treatment continued during substance-use treatment. It made the calls less overwhelming and helped me spot programs that actually coordinated both.
