Trying to find treatment that covers depression and drinking

I’ve been trying to find treatment that addresses both my depression and drinking, but most places seem focused on one or the other. When my mood gets bad, drinking becomes harder to control, and then it makes the depression worse. I’m tired of being passed between providers.

I think I need an integrated program with someone who understands both issues instead of treating them separately. Has anyone found this kind of care through a therapist, outpatient program, or community clinic?

@Virginia_Fernandez, being passed between providers sounds exhausting, especially when the drinking and depression are feeding into each other. I had better luck searching for “dual diagnosis” or “co-occurring disorders” instead of just addiction or depression treatment.

One practical thing that helped was calling a community mental health clinic and asking directly whether one clinician could coordinate both issues. I also asked what happens if I’m not ready for complete sobriety yet, since that helped me get an honest answer about whether the program would actually fit.

@Gregory_Morgan, asking what happens if someone isn’t ready for complete sobriety yet is a really useful question. Some programs act like you have to promise everything upfront, which can make it harder to even ask for help.

I’d probably ask about medication, therapy, and alcohol support in the same intake too. Having to explain the whole situation over and over to different people gets old fast, and it seems like one coordinated plan would make more sense.
