Trying to find severe anxiety treatment that actually helps

I’m getting pretty worn down trying to find severe anxiety treatment that actually helps. I’ve tried therapy, medication, breathing exercises, cutting caffeine, and keeping busy, but the relief either doesn’t last or comes with side effects that create new problems.

The hardest part is that I can look fine from the outside while my body is constantly in panic mode. Some days I can barely focus, sleep, or make simple decisions. I’ve had appointments where I felt rushed, like I was expected to already know which treatment would work for me.

I’m trying not to give up, but it’s difficult when every option takes weeks or months to show results. Has anyone found a treatment plan that made a noticeable difference for severe anxiety?

The part about looking fine while your body is in panic mode is rough. I’ve had people assume I was doing okay because I could still show up and get through a conversation, while inside I couldn’t settle down at all.

What helped me most was finding a clinician who slowed things down and treated the sleep and physical symptoms as part of the problem, not just something to push through. We tracked what changed after each adjustment instead of changing several things at once. It took time, but that made the side effects easier to spot and gave me something concrete to discuss at appointments.

You shouldn’t have to arrive with the answer already figured out. A second opinion might be worth considering, especially from someone who regularly treats severe anxiety.

@Jamie_Anderson, tracking one change at a time sounds way more useful than trying a bunch of things and not knowing what caused what. I’ve had appointments where I couldn’t even remember which symptom started when, so writing it down could make the conversation less scattered.

The sleep part makes sense too. When I’m running on almost no sleep, the anxiety feels twice as loud and even basic decisions get harder. Finding someone who takes that seriously instead of just saying to push through sounds like a big difference.
