I’ve been trying to find mental health and addiction support in Surrey, but it’s been harder than I expected. There are a lot of services listed online, yet I’m not always sure which ones take new clients or where to start. I’m looking for something that feels practical and not judgmental, especially for getting help before things get worse. Has anyone had a good experience with local support?
The bit about wanting help before things get worse makes sense. I put off contacting services before because I assumed I’d be told I wasn’t bad enough yet, or that I’d have to figure out the right service on my own.
What helped me was calling a local drug and alcohol service directly and asking them to explain the options, rather than relying on the website. They could say whether they were taking referrals and point me elsewhere if not. I’d also ask about waiting times, one-to-one support, and whether mental health and addiction are dealt with together.
If calling feels like too much, sending the same short message to a few places might be easier. Just say what’s going on, that you want practical non-judgmental support, and ask what the first step is.
@Jonathan_Lopez, asking them to explain the options instead of trying to pick the “right” service sounds really useful. I’ve found that websites can make things feel more confusing than they need to be, especially when every service has different rules.
The short message idea would probably help too. I’d keep it saved in my notes so I didn’t have to rewrite everything each time. Asking about waiting times and whether they handle mental health alongside addiction is a good way to avoid being passed between places.
