I’m trying to find help before things get completely out of hand, but I keep hesitating until I’m already in a bad place. Part of me says I should be able to manage it, and another part knows that waiting usually makes everything harder. Addiction and mental health problems seem to feed into each other, especially when I’m anxious or not sleeping.
I’m looking into local services, but the choices are confusing and I’m worried about being judged or passed from one place to another. I don’t need someone to fix everything at once. I need a clear first step and somebody who will take me seriously before there’s a crisis.
Has anyone found a good way to approach rescue or emergency mental health and addiction services early?

@Grant_Green, the anxiety and lack of sleep feeding into everything is a useful detail to lead with when you call. I’d say plainly that you’re seeking help early, mention the substance use, and ask which service handles both rather than letting them send you in circles.
I’ve found it helps to write down one or two numbers before making the call, such as how long you’ve been sleeping poorly and what happens when things worsen. If you’re worried about being dismissed, asking for a same-day assessment or a crisis team contact can make the request more specific.
And if you feel unsafe or unable to control what happens next, use emergency services rather than waiting for an appointment.

Nancy, writing down how long the poor sleep has lasted is practical advice. I used to lose track of the details when I was anxious, and having a few notes in front of me made the phone call much clearer.
Asking which service handles both problems is useful too. It can save someone from having to explain the same situation repeatedly while feeling worse.
