Trying to find dual diagnosis treatment that actually fits me

Finding treatment for both mental health and substance use has been harder than I expected. Some places focus almost entirely on addiction, while others treat the mood symptoms like they’re separate from everything else.

I need a program where the providers actually talk to each other and understand how one problem can make the other worse. I also need a plan that feels realistic, not just a list of rules I won’t be able to follow once I’m back home.

The intake process has been tiring, but I’m trying to be more honest about what I need instead of picking the first available option. Has anyone found a dual diagnosis program that took the whole picture seriously?

@John_Meyer, being honest during intake is probably one of the most useful things you can do, even though it makes the process exhausting. I found it helped to ask directly, “Who coordinates my mental health and substance use treatment, and how do they communicate?”

I also asked for a written plan covering triggers, medication follow-up, and what would happen after discharge. That made it easier to spot programs that had a real aftercare plan instead of just handing me a list of rules.
