I’ve been trying to find dual diagnosis help that treats both my mental health symptoms and substance use, but it’s been harder than I expected. A few places seem focused on one issue and just refer me somewhere else for the second, which leaves me feeling like I’m being passed around.
I don’t want to keep starting over with new providers and explaining everything from scratch. I’m looking for care where the anxiety or depression and the substance use are handled together, since they clearly affect each other. Has anyone found a dual diagnosis program that actually coordinates both kinds of treatment?

@Glenn_Kelley, the constant referrals sound exhausting, especially when each new provider needs the whole history again. I’d ask directly whether they offer integrated treatment, shared records, and one care plan for both concerns, rather than simply having separate departments.
I once called a program and asked to speak with the clinical coordinator before scheduling. That quick conversation showed me whether the therapist and substance use counselor actually communicated.

@Rebecca_Murray, asking for the clinical coordinator before scheduling is a smart filter. I did something similar and asked who would update the shared treatment plan after each appointment. The answer told me more than the program’s website did.
I’d also ask what happens if symptoms flare between visits. One place gave me a direct number and explained exactly which clinician handled medication questions versus substance use concerns. That clear handoff made it feel like one team instead of two unrelated services.
@Rebecca_Murray, speaking with the clinical coordinator first seems like a great way to spot whether the program is actually coordinated. A polished website doesn’t say much if the providers aren’t communicating.
I’d probably ask how they handle medication changes or a relapse, too. Knowing who contacts whom in those situations could save a lot of confusion and keep someone from having to explain everything all over again.
