Trying to find addiction treatment that also understands my anxiety

Finding addiction treatment that understands anxiety

I’ve been looking into addiction treatment, but I’m worried about ending up somewhere that treats the substance use and ignores everything happening underneath it. My anxiety gets so intense that even making the first phone call can feel impossible, and withdrawal sounds frightening when I already struggle with panic and poor sleep.

I remember sitting in a clinic parking lot once, gripping the steering wheel and telling myself to go inside. I left without opening the door. That memory still makes me feel embarrassed, but it also shows me how much anxiety needs to be part of the treatment plan.

How did you find a program that took both addiction and anxiety seriously?

@Danny_Greene, leaving the clinic parking lot probably felt like a failure at the time, but it sounds more like anxiety taking over than a lack of willingness. Showing up at all, even if you couldn’t get through the door, still says something.

When you call programs, you might ask directly whether they provide integrated treatment for substance use and anxiety, and how they handle panic or insomnia during withdrawal. A good program should be able to answer without making you feel like a problem.

Could someone you trust make the first call with you, or even call ahead and explain that walking in may be difficult?

@Deborah_Walker, the suggestion to have someone call ahead really helps. Anxiety can make explaining everything feel like another hurdle, so having a trusted person mention the panic and difficulty walking in could take some pressure off.

I’d also want to know whether they can arrange a quieter intake or let someone accompany me inside. Small practical accommodations can make the difference between turning around and getting through the door.
