Trying to figure out which eating disorder program actually fits me

I’m trying to figure out which eating disorder program would actually fit me, and the options are starting to blur together. Some are residential, some are partial hospitalization, and others seem more flexible but maybe not enough support.

I’m not sure how to judge what I need beyond “I’m struggling.” I worry about choosing something too intense, but I also don’t want to pick a program that looks good online and leaves me feeling unsupported. I’m paying attention to the staff, meal support, therapy approach, and whether they treat the whole person instead of just focusing on food.

If you’ve compared programs before, what helped you decide?

Sandra, asking exactly what happens when you’re having a hard meal was more useful to me than comparing program labels. I wanted to know who would be present, how distress would be handled, and whether support continued between meals.

I once chose a program after a reassuring intake call, then learned the therapist turnover was high and medical support was limited. Now I’d ask for the average length of stay, staff credentials, discharge planning, and how they step someone up or down in care. A direct question about what they recommend for your current symptoms may also help separate a good fit from a polished website.

Pamela, the therapist turnover point would make me pause too. A friendly intake call can hide a lot if the person you connect with won’t actually be there once treatment starts. I’d ask how long the current clinical team has been in place and whether patients get told when staffing changes.

The question about stepping care up or down is really useful too. I’d want to know what happens if I’m struggling more than expected, instead of having to wait until things become a crisis. A clear answer about that would probably tell me more than the program’s website.
