Thoughts on Gaming and Mental Health
This reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend recently about the balance between gaming and mental health. He was worried about the idea of gaming disorder being included in the ICD-11. I get where he’s coming from, but I can’t help but think there’s a lot more to gaming than just the potential negatives.
For me, gaming has been a wonderful escape. After a long day, diving into a different world where I can be heroic or strategic is a great way to unwind. I’ve made friendships through gaming that have lasted for years. These connections can be incredibly supportive, especially when life gets a bit overwhelming.
That said, I do understand the concerns about how gaming can consume our lives. There’s definitely a fine line between enjoying it as a hobby and letting it take over everything else. I think it’s important to be mindful of how many hours we spend and what we might be neglecting in the process. How do we keep that balance?
I’ve found that setting little boundaries helps a lot. For instance, I try to make sure I have certain times dedicated to gaming and other times for family and self-care. When I notice I’m gaming more than usual, it’s a great signal for me to step back and re-evaluate how I’m feeling overall. It’s all about being aware of our habits and how they impact our mental state.
I’m curious—what’s everyone else’s take on this? Are there ways you’ve learned to balance your interests with mental wellness? I think sharing our experiences could really help each other navigate this complex relationship with gaming. After all, it’s about enjoying the journey, right?
