Thinking about how therapy helped me with my drinking

This caught my attention since I’ve been reflecting a lot on how therapy has truly changed my perspective on drinking. A while back, I was caught in this cycle where alcohol felt like the only way to unwind or escape from life’s stresses. I thought it was just a normal part of being social or having fun, but eventually, it started to feel more like a crutch than a choice.

When I decided to seek help, I honestly didn’t know what to expect from therapy. I was a bit hesitant at first, like, would sitting in a room talking about my feelings really change anything? But it did. I found that having those conversations opened up a whole new understanding of my relationship with alcohol.

One of the biggest realizations for me came from identifying the roots of why I turned to drinking. It wasn’t just about having a good time; it was often about coping with anxiety or feeling overwhelmed. Therapy provided this safe space to explore those feelings without any judgment, which helped me see that I had other ways to cope that didn’t involve alcohol.

It’s interesting how therapy helped me reframe my thoughts. I started to see that I could have fun and socialize without relying on a drink. I remember one session in particular where my therapist encouraged me to think about the activities I genuinely enjoy. We brainstormed a list, and it turned out there were so many things I had been neglecting. I began to explore new hobbies, reconnect with friends in healthier ways, and even found a few activities that filled my weekends with joy rather than hangovers.

I’m not saying it was easy—there were definitely moments of temptation and self-doubt. But each time I chose not to drink, I felt a little stronger and more in control. It’s empowering to know that I don’t need alcohol to enjoy life or to handle stress.

Looking back, I’m grateful for the discomfort that pushed me toward therapy. It’s been a journey, and I still have my ups and downs, but I feel hopeful. I wonder if others have had similar experiences. How has therapy impacted your relationship with substances? What new activities have you found that bring you joy? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
