Thinking about becoming a drug and alcohol counselor

I’ve been thinking seriously about becoming a drug and alcohol counselor. I’ve dealt with enough of my own stuff to understand how hard it can be to ask for help, but I also know that personal experience alone doesn’t make someone good at counseling.

The part that appeals to me is being there when someone is finally ready to make a change, even if they keep slipping up. I’d want to help without judging or acting like I have all the answers. At the same time, I’m a little worried about burnout and bringing clients’ problems home with me.

I’m looking into the education, certification, and day-to-day reality now. If anyone works in this field, what’s one thing you wish you knew before starting?
