I had an anxiety attack the other day, and I feel like I’m still processing what happened. It always catches me off guard, like a wave crashing when I’m just trying to enjoy a calm day. In that moment, it felt like my heart was racing, and my mind was running a million miles an hour. I could hear my thoughts spiraling, and it was hard to catch my breath.
What helped me this time was something I’ve been trying to work on: grounding techniques. It’s funny because I’ve read about them so many times, but in the heat of an attack, it’s easy to forget. I remembered to focus on my surroundings instead of getting lost in my anxiety. I started naming five things I could see, four things I could touch, three things I could hear, two things I could smell, and one thing I could taste. It felt a little silly at first, but it really helped pull me back to reality.
I also tried to practice some deep breathing. I learned a technique where you breathe in for four counts, hold for four, and then breathe out for six. It’s amazing how just focusing on your breath can give you a moment of clarity in the chaos. After a while, I felt the intensity of the attack start to fade, and I felt a bit more grounded.
One thing I’ve realized through all this is that it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach. What works for me might not work for someone else, and that’s okay. I’m curious if anyone else has found techniques that helped them during an anxiety attack. Have you discovered anything that really makes a difference for you? It’s always nice to share ideas and support each other through these experiences.
