Stress is making my thoughts feel scattered and hard to control

Lately stress has made my thoughts feel scattered, like they keep jumping tracks before I can finish one. I’ll start doing something simple, then suddenly I’m thinking about an old problem, a task I forgot, and some worst-case scenario that probably won’t happen.

The frustrating part is knowing I need to slow down, but my brain doesn’t seem interested in cooperating. Even quiet time can feel noisy. I’ve been trying to write things down and focus on one small task at a time, which helps a little, though it’s hard to remember when I’m already overwhelmed.

Sometimes I wonder if other people get this same out-of-control feeling when stress builds up.

The part about quiet time still feeling noisy makes a lot of sense to me. Sometimes there’s nothing happening around me, but my brain fills the space with every unfinished thought at once.

Writing things down helps me too, especially when I keep everything in my head and then treat every thought like it needs attention immediately. I’ve started putting only the next one or two things on paper instead of making a huge list, because a long list can make me feel even more overwhelmed.

@Kimberly_Drake, limiting the list to the next one or two things sounds much more manageable. I’ve found that a long list can turn into another source of pressure instead of helping me get organized.

The unfinished thoughts still show up, but writing down what can wait seems to take some of their urgency away. Sometimes I keep the note nearby and remind myself that I don’t have to solve everything in the same hour.
