Social anxiety and the little victories

This makes me think about how social anxiety can feel like an uninvited guest that just doesn’t know when to leave. There have been many times when the idea of stepping into a social situation made me want to retreat into my shell. I remember one occasion in particular when I was invited to a friend’s birthday party. The thought of being surrounded by so many people, with so many conversations happening at once, felt overwhelming. My heart raced, and I convinced myself that it would be easier to just stay home with a book.

But then, something shifted. Instead of focusing on the anxiety, I tried to remind myself of the little victories I’ve had in the past. You know, like the time I managed to strike up a conversation with a stranger while waiting in line for coffee. It felt small at the time, but looking back, it was a huge deal for me.

That night, I decided to take a deep breath and just go to the party. I set a little goal for myself: I would engage with at least one person. When I arrived, I felt that familiar knot in my stomach, but I kept reminding myself about those little victories. Slowly, I started to chat with a couple of people. To my surprise, we hit it off! It was such a relief to realize that I could connect with others, even when my anxiety was trying to hold me back.

What I’ve learned is that these small wins can really add up. Each time I face social anxiety head-on, it chips away at that feeling of dread. It’s not always easy, and I still have days where I struggle, but I’ve started to celebrate those little moments. Like when I make eye contact with someone and smile, or when I feel brave enough to speak up in a meeting.

I’m curious if anyone else has experienced similar moments? How do you celebrate your little victories when they happen? It feels like sharing these stories can be a great way to remind each other that we’re not alone in this journey.
