When stress starts taking over, I try to catch it early instead of waiting until I’m completely overwhelmed. I put my phone down, make some tea, and sit somewhere quiet for a few minutes. Sometimes I just focus on the warmth of the mug and take slow breaths. It sounds basic, but it helps pull my attention out of the spiral.
A short walk helps too, even if I only go around the block. I don’t try to solve every problem while I’m walking. I just notice the air, the houses, and what’s around me. Writing down the thoughts that keep circling can help as well. Once they’re on paper, they usually feel a little less huge.
I’ve also started doing one small, practical thing when I feel stuck, like washing dishes or clearing one surface. Finishing something simple gives my brain a break. What small thing helps you settle when stress starts building?

The part about noticing the warmth of the mug makes sense to me. Having one physical thing to focus on can interrupt the mental noise better than trying to force myself to think positively.
When I’m wound up, I usually wash my face or step outside for a few minutes, even if I just stand there. I’ve noticed that doing one ordinary task, like putting laundry away, works better for me than making a huge list. It gives my brain something simple to finish.

@Mariah_Mendoza, standing outside for a few minutes helps me too, especially when I leave my phone inside. I don’t have to make it a walk or turn it into some big self-care routine. Just feeling the air and looking around can break that locked-in feeling.
The one ordinary task idea is good. I’ll sometimes wash a few dishes or take out the trash, then stop there instead of turning it into a whole cleaning project. Having a clear finish line keeps it from becoming another thing to feel behind on.
@Mariah_Mendoza, I like that you mentioned not forcing yourself to think positively. When my mind is racing, that can feel like another task I’m failing at. Washing my face helps me in a similar way because the cool water gives me something immediate to notice.
I’ve found that putting away just the clean towels works better than tackling an entire room. Once they’re folded and put away, I can stop without feeling like I’ve created another project.
