Seeing the signs of addiction in young people

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend not too long ago. We were chatting about how we’ve seen so many young people struggling with different kinds of addictions lately. It’s hard not to notice when you look around. I mean, the signs can be pretty subtle but also glaring at the same time, right?

I recall a time when I was mentoring a couple of teenagers at a local community center. You could sense something wasn’t quite right with a few of them. One kid, in particular, had this spark in his eye—so much potential—but he seemed increasingly withdrawn. The way he started isolating himself from his friends and even skipping classes? It was concerning. I can’t help but wonder if he was leaning on substances to cope with whatever was eating away at him.

And then there’s social media. Wow, that can really amplify things, can’t it? The pressure to fit in, the constant comparison—it’s no wonder some young folks might turn to things like vaping or even harder substances. I see it as a coping mechanism for pressures that honestly, I think are sometimes too much for their age. It’s a wild world out there!

I remember talking to one of the kids about it, and he opened up about how everyone around him seemed to be doing it—using substances or engaging in other risky behaviors—to feel accepted or just to escape. It made me think about how we sometimes overlook the complexities of what might lead young people down that path.

It’s really easy to judge from the sidelines, but understanding feels a lot more powerful. I wonder if there are ways we can create safer spaces for them to express what they’re going through. Have you ever had similar experiences? How do you think we can better support the younger generation in navigating these challenges?
