Schizophrenia and addiction keep pulling me back and forth

I feel stuck in a cycle with schizophrenia and addiction. When my symptoms get intense, using can seem like the fastest way to quiet everything down. Then it makes my thoughts, paranoia, sleep, and motivation worse, which leaves me even more vulnerable the next time things flare up.

What’s frustrating is that I can understand the pattern and still get pulled into it. Part of me wants stability, and another part keeps reaching for whatever brings quick relief. Treatment can feel complicated too, since I worry about being judged for using, but I also need to be honest so I can get the right help.

I’m trying to focus on small steps instead of expecting myself to fix everything at once. Has anyone found a treatment approach that helped with both schizophrenia and addiction together?

Sandra, the part about knowing the pattern but still reaching for quick relief makes sense to me. Understanding it doesn’t always make the urge manageable in the moment, especially when paranoia and poor sleep are already wearing you down.

I had better results when I told my psychiatrist plainly about my substance use instead of trying to separate it from my symptoms. A dual-diagnosis program helped because the same team could work on both rather than treating one as a side issue. Even starting with one honest appointment felt like progress.

@Caitlyn_Howe, telling the psychiatrist plainly sounds like it took a lot of courage. I can see how keeping the substance use separate would make it harder for the treatment team to understand what’s actually happening.

The shared-team approach makes sense, especially when poor sleep and paranoia can feed the urge to use. One honest appointment being considered progress is a helpful way to look at it. Small steps seem much more realistic than trying to solve everything at once.
