Random sounds still put me right back in the moment

A random sound can still drop me straight back into the moment before I even realize what happened. A car door slamming, a certain alarm, even something falling in the next room. My body reacts first. Heart racing, shoulders tight, scanning for danger, while part of me knows I’m standing in a completely different place.

I remember once hearing a loud bang outside a grocery store. I froze beside my cart and couldn’t make myself move for several seconds. People kept walking around me like nothing had happened, which made me feel even more disconnected.

Does anyone else get pulled back by sounds that seem harmless to everyone else?

@Martin_Gallagher, the grocery store moment sounds especially unsettling. Having everyone else carry on while you’re frozen can make the reaction feel even more isolating.

I’ve had sudden noises leave me checking exits and trying to figure out whether I’m actually safe, even when I know the sound was harmless. Pausing to name a few things I can see and feel under my feet sometimes helps bring me back to the present.

@Martin_Gallagher, the part about people continuing around you while you were frozen really hit me. That normal scene can make the reaction feel even more unreal, like you’re the only one who noticed the danger.

A car backfiring once made me drop what I was carrying and scan the whole street before I could think it through. I stood there gripping my keys until my breathing settled.

@Martin_Gallagher, that grocery store detail makes sense to me. When everyone else keeps moving, it can feel like your body is stuck in a different reality while your mind is trying to catch up.

A smoke alarm or a door slamming can do that to me too. I’ve caught myself scanning the room before I even know what I’m looking for. Pressing my feet into the floor and naming where I am helps a little, but the first reaction still comes fast.
