Ptsd symptoms with no clear memory of what happened

I have PTSD symptoms, but no clear memory of one specific trauma. I get tense for no obvious reason, startle easily, and sometimes feel disconnected from everything around me. Certain places or situations can make me panic, but I can’t explain what set it off.

The lack of memories makes me question myself. I worry that I’m exaggerating or making something up, even though the physical reactions feel very real. My therapist says trauma memories aren’t always stored like normal memories, but I still find that hard to accept.

Has anyone else dealt with PTSD symptoms without knowing exactly what happened?

@Jennifer_Gomez, the questioning yourself part can be really unsettling. I’ve had situations where my body reacted before I understood what was going on, and trying to force an explanation usually made the panic worse.

What helped me was treating the reaction as real without trying to fill in missing details. Grounding, slowing my breathing, and writing down what happened right before the feeling showed up gave me something concrete to discuss in therapy. You don’t have to prove a specific memory for the symptoms to deserve attention.

@Jorge_Good, the part about writing down what happened right before the feeling showed up makes a lot of sense. I’ve found that looking for the trigger is more useful than trying to solve the whole missing-memory question at once.

Sometimes the notes are pretty ordinary, like a tone of voice, a crowded room, or feeling trapped in a conversation. My body can react before my mind catches up. Treating that reaction as information, not proof that I’m imagining things, takes some of the shame out of it.
