Ptsd memories still show up when i think i’m doing fine

I can have a stretch where things seem steady, then a PTSD memory shows up out of nowhere. Sometimes it’s just a smell, a sound, or a thought that catches me off guard. I may look fine to everyone else, but inside I’m suddenly back in that moment.

The hardest part is feeling like I’ve lost progress, even though I know one bad memory doesn’t erase the better days. I’m trying to notice it without fighting it, then remind myself that I’m safe now. It helps a little, but it still gets tiring.

That part about looking fine while being pulled back into the moment is rough. I’ve had times where I’m carrying on a normal conversation, but my body is reacting like something dangerous is happening. It can feel pretty isolating.

Noticing it without treating it like a failure has helped me too, even when it doesn’t make the memory disappear. I try to focus on one solid thing around me, like the chair under me or the temperature in the room, and give myself a few minutes before expecting to feel normal again.

@Ryan_Randall, giving yourself a few minutes before expecting to feel normal again makes a lot of sense. I used to get frustrated when grounding didn’t shut everything off right away, but sometimes it just keeps things from getting worse until my body catches up.

The chair or temperature trick sounds simple, but those physical details can be easier to hold onto than trying to reason with the memory. I’ve found that not forcing myself to act completely fine helps too. Even a quick bathroom break or stepping outside can give me enough space to settle.
