For as long as I can remember, I’ve had crippling social anxiety. It’s hard to describe the impact it has had on my life – it’s been an ever-present feeling in my life, like a dark cloud that followed me everywhere I went. Everyone around me was having conversations, making friends, and living their best lives while I was trying to navigate crippling anxiety every single day.
I thought there would never be any hope or solace for me until one day when something changed. After years of dealing with the anxiety at its worst level, hitting bottom so to speak, I decided to seek help from a professional counselor. The advice they gave me combined with therapy would go on to change my life forever.
The first and most important shift in mindset for me was learning to accept that overcoming this challenging part of my life was going to require time and effort - something that won’t happen overnight, or even over the course of several weeks or months. With baby steps and lots of self-reflection also hardcore commitment, I started taking more and more steps out into the world - starting conversations with strangers, going out on my own without anyone with constant reassurance of my skillset as human being and talking about social topics without fear.
Slowly but surely the once crippling anxiety started becoming less oppressive and eventually turned into merely a slight apprehensive feeling which motivated me in ways unimaginable before! As I watched this transformation take place inside myself so suddenly yet mindfully through hard work and commitment it gave me a newfound sense of self-confidence knowing that anything is possible if you have patience, faith in yourself ,and take action no matter how difficult things may seem in outset.
Today fear still exists for sure just like everyone else but that doesn’t stop me from engaging in meaningful conversations or meetups .Now i’m able to take ownership and charge when it comes to leading activities both small scale ones at home such as game nights or formal events such dinners conferences etcetera…Anxiety is still present but certainly not victorious!
