Old memories still setting off my body as if danger is happening now

Old memories still set off my body before I even understand what happened. A few weeks ago, someone closed a door hard behind me, and suddenly my heart was racing, my hands were shaking, and I was scanning the room for somewhere to hide. I knew I was safe, but my body clearly hadn’t gotten the message.

The strange part is that the memory itself wasn’t even fully clear. It was more like a flash of feeling, then the panic showed up. I felt embarrassed afterward because nothing was actually happening, but the fear felt completely real in the moment.

Does anyone else have their body react before their mind can connect it to an old memory?

Anna, the body reacting before the memory becomes clear makes sense to me. I’ve had a sudden sound bring on a tight chest and a need to check the room before I even knew what had been triggered. The reasoning part catches up later.

I’ve found it helps to name a few present details, like the room I’m in and what day it is, while letting the shaking pass. Feeling embarrassed only seems to add another layer, since the reaction isn’t something I’m choosing.

The grounding details sound useful, especially naming the day and where you are. I’ve noticed that saying them out loud gives my brain something concrete to focus on while my body catches up.

The embarrassment can make the reaction last longer for me too. Reminding myself that it’s an automatic response, not a choice, takes some of the extra pressure off.
