Ocd thoughts keep blending with my anxiety and depression

My OCD thoughts keep blending with my anxiety and depression, and it’s getting hard to tell what’s actually an obsession versus just feeling hopeless or worried. Sometimes I’ll get stuck analyzing a thought, then the anxiety makes it feel urgent, and the depression makes me assume the worst about what it means. I know thoughts aren’t facts, but that doesn’t stop them from feeling convincing when everything hits at once.

The hardest part is that trying to figure out which disorder is causing what can turn into another OCD loop. I end up checking my feelings and looking for certainty, which usually makes me feel more confused. Has anyone found a way to separate these symptoms without turning the whole thing into another compulsion?

Marcus, the part about checking your feelings becoming another compulsion makes a lot of sense. I’ve found it helps to stop trying to label the thought in the moment and instead notice what it’s asking me to do, such as analyze, reassure myself, or reach a definite answer.

Sometimes I use a simple response like, “Maybe this is OCD, maybe it isn’t, but I don’t have to solve it right now.” Then I return to something concrete, even if the anxiety is still there. It doesn’t give the certainty OCD wants, but it can keep the spiral from taking over.

Marcus, the checking of your feelings sounds like the part that can quietly keep the loop going. I’ve noticed that when I’m trying to determine exactly what a thought “means,” I’m often seeking reassurance rather than actually solving anything.

One thing that helps me is focusing on the next small action instead of identifying the source. I might say, “This feels urgent, but I don’t have to settle it right now,” then make tea, take a short walk, or handle one ordinary task. The thought can remain unanswered.

When the hopelessness gets especially heavy, I’d treat that separately by telling my therapist or doctor, rather than trying to diagnose the overlap in my head. Do you notice the checking gets worse at particular times, like late at night or when you’re already worn out?
