Obsessive thoughts keep looping even when nothing is wrong

My brain keeps looping on things that don’t even seem wrong. I’ll check something, feel reassured for a minute, and then the same thought comes back with a slightly different “what if.” Nothing has actually changed, but my mind acts like I missed some huge clue.

The hardest part is that arguing with the thought sometimes makes it louder. I can know it’s probably irrational and still feel pulled into checking, reviewing conversations, or trying to get that perfect sense of certainty. By the time I realize how long I’ve been stuck in it, I’m exhausted.

I’m trying to practice letting the thought sit there without solving it immediately, but that feels really uncomfortable. Does anyone else deal with obsessive thoughts that show up even when everything is basically fine?

@Elizabeth_Chapman the “slightly different what if” part gets me. I can answer one version of a thought, then my brain just moves the goalposts and finds another detail to question. It makes checking feel useful for about a minute, even though it usually keeps the loop going.

Letting the thought sit there without fixing it feels pretty awful at first. I’ve been trying to notice, “there’s that thought again,” and then go back to whatever I was doing instead of debating it. I don’t always manage it, but even delaying the checking a little seems better than chasing certainty until I’m wiped out.

@Elizabeth_Chapman, the way reassurance only lasts a minute is familiar. I can check a locked door, walk away feeling settled, and then wonder if I really turned the key all the way. Going back usually gives me a brief sense of relief, then creates another reason to doubt it.

What helps me sometimes is treating the discomfort as the thing I’m allowing, rather than treating the thought like a problem to solve. It still feels unfinished, but I try to leave it unfinished and continue with whatever I was doing.

@Michelle_Walker, the goalposts moving is such a frustrating part of it. I’ll think I’ve finally answered the concern, then notice one tiny detail I didn’t account for and suddenly I’m back at the beginning.

Delaying the checking has helped me too, even when I still end up doing it later. Sometimes I set a short timer and keep doing whatever I was doing until it goes off. It doesn’t make the thought disappear, but it gives me a chance to see that the urgency rises and falls on its own.
