Navigating the ups and downs of ptsd and c-ptsd together

This caught my attention since I’ve been on quite the journey navigating the complexities of PTSD and complex PTSD. It’s a bit of a rollercoaster, to say the least.

When I first started unpacking my experiences, I wasn’t even aware of the distinction between these two. PTSD often gets the spotlight, like it’s the more prominent cousin of the two. But then there’s complex PTSD, which, for many of us, feels like an entirely different beast. It’s like dealing with a series of ongoing traumas rather than a single event; it creeps in through the cracks of daily life, doesn’t it?

I found myself in therapy, trying to make sense of it all. There were days when I felt like I was making headway—like I could finally breathe a little easier. Then there were others when the weight of it all hit me like a ton of bricks. It’s fascinating and frustrating how these feelings can be so intertwined. One moment, I’d be focusing on a specific trauma, and the next, I’d be knee-deep in the emotional fallout of my childhood experiences.

What I’ve learned along the way is that it’s okay to embrace that duality. The ups and downs are part of the process. I remember one session when my therapist encouraged me to acknowledge both the PTSD and C-PTSD separately and together. It was a revelation! Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the complexities, I began to see how these experiences shaped me and informed my understanding of the world.

I still have days that feel insurmountable, of course. Just last week, I was triggered by something seemingly innocuous—a smell, a sound, you name it—and it sent me spiraling. But I’ve started to develop a toolkit of sorts. Simple things, like grounding techniques, deep breathing, and even writing things down. It’s about finding what works for me. I also lean on a close circle of friends who understand that sometimes I just need to talk, or sometimes I just need silence.

Looking back, it’s wild to think that once I was so caught up in the stigma of mental health. Now, sharing my experiences feels liberating. I wonder if others have had similar experiences? How do you balance the effects of PTSD and C-PTSD in your life? What strategies have helped you through the tougher days?

I’d love to hear your thoughts or experiences. It’s comforting to know we’re not alone in this journey.
