Navigating love with ocd traits in marriage

You know, it’s fascinating how love can bring out all the different shades of who we are, including the quirks and challenges that come with our mental health. I’ve been reflecting a lot on my experiences in marriage and how my OCD traits play a role in that dynamic.

When I first got married, I honestly didn’t think much about how my perfectionism and need for control would impact my relationship. I mean, who thinks about that when they’re in the throes of wedding bliss? But as we settled into our routine, I started to notice it—little things like feeling the urge to organize our shared space in a specific way or struggling with the need to double-check things, like whether I locked the door or turned off the lights. It might sound trivial, but it can really add up.

One of the biggest challenges has been realizing how my compulsions can sometimes create tension. For example, there are moments when I get so caught up in making everything “just right” that I forget to simply enjoy the moment with my partner. I remember one time we were cooking dinner together, and I kept rearranging the ingredients. He was so patient, but I could see the confusion on his face. It made me stop and think—was I prioritizing my need for order over our shared experience?

I’ve learned that communication is key. It’s not always easy to articulate what’s going on in my mind, but being open about my OCD traits has helped tremendously. My partner is genuinely supportive, and that makes all the difference. When I explain my need to have things a certain way or why I might feel anxious about a messy situation, it creates a space for understanding rather than frustration.

Honestly, it’s a continuous journey. Some days are better than others, and I’m learning to be kinder to myself. There’s this sense of balance I’m striving for—embracing the need for structure while also allowing myself to be spontaneous. It’s like a dance of sorts. Some days I lead, some days I follow, and that’s okay.
