Navigating bipolar with cbt and what i've learned

What stood out to me recently is how much I’ve grown through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in managing my bipolar disorder. It’s not always an easy journey, but there are definitely some bright spots that make it all worthwhile.

When I first started CBT, I was a bit skeptical. I mean, how could changing my thought patterns really impact the rollercoaster that is bipolar disorder? But I decided to give it a shot, and I’m so glad I did. One of the first things I learned was to recognize when my thoughts were spiraling. It’s like having a little alarm system in my mind that goes off when I start slipping into negative thinking.

For instance, when I feel a wave of sadness or irritability creeping in, I now try to pause and ask myself a few questions: Is this thought based in reality? What evidence do I have to support it? What would I say to a friend who felt this way? This process has been really eye-opening. It’s helped me separate my emotions from the actual situations I’m facing, which can be a game changer.

Another thing I appreciate about CBT is the focus on action. There were times when I would feel paralyzed by my emotions, unsure of how to move forward. But CBT encourages me to take small, manageable steps. For example, when I realize I’m isolating myself during a depressive episode, I might set a goal to just send a text to a friend or take a short walk. It’s incredible how those little actions can break the cycle of feeling trapped.

I’ve also learned the importance of self-compassion along the way. It’s so easy to beat myself up for having mood swings or for not being as productive as I’d like. But through therapy, I’ve started treating myself with more kindness. Instead of saying, “Why can’t you just get it together?” I ask myself, “What do you need right now?” This shift has made a huge difference in how I cope.

I’d love to hear from others who have navigated similar paths. What strategies have you found helpful in managing your emotions? Has CBT or another form of therapy changed how you view your experiences? Let’s keep this conversation going—there’s so much we can learn from each other!
