My tbi changed how i handle stress and mental health

My TBI changed how I handle stress and mental health. Things that used to feel manageable can now pile up fast, and once I’m overwhelmed, it takes much longer to calm down. I’m more aware of my limits, but that doesn’t mean I always catch them in time.

I’ve had to be more careful with sleep, noise, busy days, and emotional stress. Therapy and taking breaks help, although I still get frustrated that my brain doesn’t respond the way it used to. It can feel like I’m dealing with both the injury and the mental health effects at the same time.

@Christine_Rodriguez, the part about not always catching your limits in time really hit me. Sometimes I notice the warning signs only after I’ve already pushed too far, and then a quiet evening doesn’t fix it right away.

I’ve started treating sleep and breaks as part of the plan instead of something I earn after getting everything done. One small example is leaving a noisy gathering before I feel completely drained. It feels awkward sometimes, but I recover faster.

Leaving before you’re completely wiped out has helped me too. I used to wait until I was already irritable and foggy, which made getting home feel like another task.

One thing that made this easier was setting a specific exit time before I went somewhere noisy. I didn’t have to debate with myself in the moment. It still feels a little awkward, but I’d rather leave early than lose the whole next day recovering.
