Anxiety has been a battle I’ve been fighting for years, and yet only in the last year have I really begun to take it seriously. A few months ago, I was at my wit’s end - feeling overwhelmed, helpless, and unable to cope with simple tasks.
In an effort to take matters into my own hands and make real change, I sought help from a therapist. After months of long talks about the root of my anxiety and working together to create concrete methods for dealing with it, I am able to see light at the end of the tunnel.
One of the most important realizations that I came away with is that there is no magic wand when it comes to anxiety; it’s something you must manage every single day. Because of this commitment, there are days that seem more challenging than others – times when fear or avoidance win out over logic and reason – but nowadays these “lapses” tend to be far fewer than they used to be.
Naturally, some situations still make me anxious but now I feel better equipped than ever before to pause in times like these and talk myself back down from panic or despair. Putting what I learned during therapy into practice helps me remember that despite moments of distress in this journey towards wellness, stress management isn’t something that can be mastered quickly — patience and perseverance are key ingredients in overcoming anxiety!
