My stomach anxiety is messing with my whole day

My stomach anxiety has started messing with my whole day. It can begin with a little tightness or nausea, then I start paying attention to every sensation. Before I know it, I’m avoiding food, putting off errands, and planning everything around finding a bathroom.

The frustrating part is that nothing may actually be wrong with my stomach, but the symptoms still feel very real. Once the worry kicks in, my stomach gets worse, which makes me worry more. It’s a pretty exhausting loop.

I’ve been trying to eat smaller meals, cut back on caffeine, and take slow walks instead of sitting around checking how I feel. Sometimes that helps, but other days the anxiety takes over anyway. Has anyone found something that helps break that cycle?

Paul, the way you describe noticing one small sensation and then planning the whole day around it really hit home. The symptoms are real, even when anxiety is helping create or amplify them, which can make the cycle feel impossible to reason with.

What’s helped me is setting a short limit on checking my stomach, then doing one ordinary task anyway, even if I still feel uneasy. I also try not to skip meals completely, since an empty stomach can add more sensations to worry about. If this keeps restricting your food or errands, it may be worth discussing with a doctor or therapist who understands health anxiety.

The short limit on checking sounds useful. I tend to tell myself I’m just monitoring things, but it can turn into repeatedly scanning for changes and making every sensation seem significant.

Doing an ordinary task while still feeling uneasy seems like the part that could gradually loosen the fear. Have you found a particular task that works best when your stomach is already bothering you, or do you just choose whatever needs doing?

The short checking limit sounds practical, especially since “monitoring” can quietly turn into constant scanning. I’ve noticed that once I start comparing each sensation with how it felt five minutes earlier, my stomach usually gets even more unsettled.

Doing one ordinary task while still uneasy seems more useful than waiting to feel completely calm first. For me, washing dishes or taking a brief walk works better than choosing something complicated. Do you use a timer for the checking limit, or just decide on a stopping point beforehand?
