My phone is making my mental health harder to manage

My phone is making my mental health harder to manage. I pick it up when I’m stressed, then end up scrolling through bad news and other people’s problems. It leaves me more anxious and distracted, but I still reach for it again a few minutes later.

I’ve started leaving it in another room during meals and before bed. It helps a little, though I still catch myself looking for it without thinking. I’m trying to replace some of that habit with music, a short walk, or just sitting quietly.

@Ashley_Tucker, leaving it in another room during meals and before bed sounds like a solid boundary. I’ve noticed that having it nearby makes me reach for it before I’ve even decided I want to check anything.

The replacement matters too. A short walk or music gives me something to do with that restless feeling instead of just relying on willpower. Do you find that the urge is worse at a particular time, like late at night or when you’re already stressed?

@Ashley_Tucker, the automatic reaching is the part that gets me too. One thing that helped was moving news and social apps off my home screen and turning off their notifications. I still choose to open them sometimes, but I’m not being pulled in every few minutes.

I also keep a small notebook where my phone usually sits. When I reach for it without thinking, I write down what I was feeling first, even if it’s just “stressed” or “bored.” That tiny pause has made it easier to choose music or a walk instead.
