My mind keeps finding new things to worry about

My mind keeps finding new things to worry about, even when the last thing turned out fine. I’ll spend half the day thinking about one problem, then suddenly latch onto something else, usually something I can’t actually control. A few nights ago I was worried about a conversation from work, replaying every sentence, and then my brain switched to worrying about a bill that isn’t even due yet.

The hardest part is that the worry feels useful while it’s happening, like I’m preparing myself. Really, I’m just exhausting myself. Has anything helped you interrupt that cycle before it takes over?

The part about worry feeling useful really gets me. I used to treat every anxious thought like a problem I had to solve immediately, even when there was nothing I could do yet.

What helps me is writing down the worry and one concrete action, if there is one. If there isn’t, I tell myself I can revisit it at a set time instead of letting it follow me all day. I did this with an upcoming bill recently, and seeing the payment date and amount on paper made it feel much less urgent.

Putting the worry and the actual due date on paper sounds simple, but I can see how it would take some of the mystery out of it. My brain tends to turn “not due yet” into “something is wrong right now,” especially with bills.

I’ve started asking myself what action is actually available today. If the answer is none, I’ll jot it down and try to leave it there. I don’t always manage that, but having a set time to revisit it keeps me from mentally checking the same problem every ten minutes.

@Hayley_Stanley, writing down the payment date and amount has helped me too. Seeing the actual numbers usually shrinks the vague sense of danger into something manageable.

One thing I added was putting a reminder on my calendar for the day I’ll deal with it. Once that’s set, I tell myself, “This has a place and time.” It doesn’t stop every worry, but it keeps me from reopening the same mental file all evening.
