My mental health story: trauma informed care

It’s hard to put into words the impact that trauma has had on my life. For years, I brushed it off. I was suffering under intense levels of stress and anxiety, yet I kept telling myself I could just “think my way out” of it.

I found that compartmentalizing all of my feelings only created a downward spiral of a traumatic cycle. It was like an invisible weight pressing down on me each day and eventually, things reached a breaking point. Thankfully, with support from family and friends, I found the courage to seek help from a qualified mental health professional.

Through many months of therapy and self-care practices, I’ve come to understand how crucial it is to have access to trauma informed care. Initially this felt like an insurmountable challenge - navigating complicated insurance policies and finding local resources can be overwhelming - but taking good care of myself is worth it! Accessing trauma informed care gives me the clarity to manage my emotions more effectively, without disregarding or invalidating them.

Having experienced firsthand the power of resilience and knowledge about myself through this process has been transformative in so many ways. Though managing trauma is still something I work on daily, I no longer feel hopeless or trapped by the worries that used to consume me - now, they are simply part of my story instead.

I know exactly how you feel. I’ve been through a similar journey and it can be overwhelming when trying to access the resources you need. All too often, we try to find solutions on our own which only brings us further down a dark tunnel. That’s why it’s so important that we talk to family, friends, and professionals for easier access to the proper trauma-informed care.

It took me years to realize that taking care of myself was a must if I wanted relief from my stress and anxiety. But once I did, I couldn’t believe what a difference it made! Practice and patience were essential in helping me learn how to manage my emotions without invalidating them. It was all worth it in the end though; now instead of feeling overwhelmed by difficult memories, I turn them into understanding moments about myself.

No matter where you are in your path towards recovery, don’t ever give up hope. It takes a lot of hard work but together we can find strength in all those hard times along with resilience and self-knowledge that will stay with us throughout our lives.
