Finding help for my eating disorder has been a long and difficult journey. I was in complete denial when I first realized I had a problem, thinking it was something I could get over on my own. Unfortunately this didn’t work out and things just got worse from there.
I eventually mustered up the courage to seek help from a mental health professional; it was the best decision of my life. Having someone there to be supportive and non-judgmental was incredibly refreshing after staying silent for so long. We came up with a plan to tackle my eating disorder head-on, without letting it take control of me any longer.
Valuable lessons were learned along the way: be honest with yourself, admit you need support, and don’t give up. Staying open-minded is also key in allowing you to look beyond what’s familiar and try out new coping methods or strategies that may have helped others in similar circumstances. The process isn’t easy, but having resources available to lean on makes it that much easier.
My mental health journey still has its struggles but also many victories each day as I tackle each challenge one step at a time. Recovery comes with its own challenges but they are nothing compared to how far I’ve come thus far - which is something that never ceases to amaze me.
